“Barn/Shed Catching”

When driving to-and-from town, I go along Catching Slough and at one point there is a very ‘used’, rusty & crusty barn across the way. I am always attracted to the rich, earthy colors existing quietly with the pastures and water. I decided to paint over an earlier ‘abstract’ piece that was based on the colors of that particular barn and make it into a landscape.

More done to the previous “On Going” blog post. Almost let it get too ‘tight’ (realistic) but felt I kept the feeling of the visual moment. I’ll add a few touches (some cooler blues to fields) and leave it alone.

Chickadee

We have many Chickadees that flock our bird feeder and I am always attracted to their small size and b&w design around the head. So, I thought “small,” “fine” and Wood Engraving popped up as an answer because of its advantages of dense end-grain of a very hardwood (Maple, in this case). After engraving and gouging, the small wood block was rolled with a black oil-based engraving

ink and printed on Arches 88 paper. I enjoyed the test print and decided to keep it instead of ‘deep sixing’. Then, I thought – let’s frame it and enter the 2nd Street Gallery’s Miniature Show in Bandon, OR. Soon afterwards I find that it was purchased right after being displayed and before judging – a wonderful, and warming surprise! After the judging, I find that it was a ribbon winner. A couple of days later, I gouged some more to get some more ‘white’ around the Chickadee’s cheeks and printed an Edition of ten (10).

On Going

Attached are a couple of things I am working on. A landscape from down the road where I want to experiment with the overall rhythmic and spontaneity of nature. The small square landscape is more to capture the “usual” mood and color of our environment and I get to sit and work

One more experimental drawing before moving into a series of works dealing with a musical (sounds) theme. This graphite drawing was intended to be abstract but, somehow, nature crept its way into the forefront and took over as river (moving & resting), vegetation, and trees. The moving river is horizontal and the resting waters are the vertical, soft portion.

Thought I’d work with some graphite and deal with Values (shading) and other art element basics to keep a grasp on visual experimenting. Afterwards, I hope to feel more comfortable with paints and printmaking. For a still life I snapped off a portion of a Laurel branch that was flowering for the Spring. The drawing eventually took on the character of a landscape with experimenting by moving powdered graphite and erasing with a Kneaded erasure. Everything evolved – especially, the ‘landscape.’

Art after the snow & weeklong power outage

Decided to do another small painting of the Cooston area at Coos Bay. My goal was to keep it as loose as possible to show the vitality of the area. There is a path leading to the bay that is coated with a warm green of grass and moss. To its sides are wild bushes and brush of colors and tangled blackberry vines. At the end of the visual ending of the path are a couple of scraggly trees that seemed to wrestle with the ever-changing sky.

There! I think I got the ‘tight-tidy’ out of my system – although, it was fun figuring what went in what order. I do like the rhythm of the quiet, peaceful waters and plants.

Tidelands backgrounding

Adding slightly more detail which actually will be more background – especially with the tideland horizontal painting. The vertical ‘backyard forests’ backgrounds are more fore showing through after scratching in trees and brush.
