Shore Acres Garden Pond

by on Dec.04, 2014, under Acrylic Paintings

A couple of months ago in September I was working on a 16×20 canvas with a vague idea that was ‘going no where.’ I began to see a reflective pond with many colors taking my memory to Shore Acres Garden pond as a theme. I recalled I had a couple of reference pics similar to what was developing. One was found and it assisted in creating a basic structure as far as foreground, middle and rear. Colors, textures, and structure became invented. A fun acrylic painting!

Along Isthmus Slough

by on Aug.24, 2014, under Plein Air, Uncategorized

Oops – I skipped over an outing. After Sunset Bay and before Mingus Park we painted along Isthmus Slough near Greenacres. Like all the sloughs around here, they are the waterways for the tidewaters for the area. Isthmus is one of the longer reaching 3-4 miles toward Coquille along OR Highway 42.

For the substrate, I decided to be frugal and gessoed over an unsuccessful collage on canvas board – look closely and you will see textures of cloth and polymer medium impasto. The attraction for my setup spot was the weathered pilings. I was also taken by the “S” flow into the plane – I even lifted forward the back portion of the slough to complete the water flow from left to right. (see photo where back portion disappears)

Upon completion, I have been debating – do I like or not – too much texture? lack of point of interest? colors too mundane/more coastal gray tone? More greens?

With the painting I have added a pic from my setup spot. Also, a cropped pic of what I probably should have zeroed in on – always second guessing 🙂

Final Five

by on Feb.21, 2013, under 10 of Same (Ross Inlet)

Finished with the last 5 of the Same Composition series. It has been fun to work “outside the box” and to visualize a setting with different mind and eyes. These short studies will be helpful in future work habits in the studio where I find them to be an artist’s calisthenics before spending longer times with more major pieces.

Ross Inlet #5

by on Feb.10, 2013, under 10 of Same (Ross Inlet)

While driving home one afternoon last week during a cold spell I came upon fog being pressed down along the waterways (and roadway) and felt the view would be fun and a challenge. I first painted the landscape as could be clearly identified and followed with layering and blending while keeping a movement of light modulating through the layering.

Ross Inlet #4

With #4 I played with texturing the whole panel with Golden Modeling Paste and acrylics. Then, complimented with texture-painted rice paper for hills and foreground.
