Shore Acres Overlook South

by on Nov.30, 2014, under Oil Painting, Plein Air, Sketches, Studio Stuff

Last Tuesday’s plein air outing had cool and windy conditions dis-allowing for painting but prompting time for gathering reference material for studio. After gathering info at the end of Cape Arago highway, Cape Arago, I made a stop at Shore Acres for an hour or so. Today was studio work with pic and sketch off cliffs of Shore Acres looking south toward Whiskey Run. The Pacific was wide awake!

The following is a pic – a sketch – and oil painting (16×20) on stretched canvas:

Late October at Waterfront

by on Nov.17, 2014, under Oil Painting, Plein Air

Finished October with plein air work on the Coos Bay Waterfront boardwalk. The first was of a tugboat and pilings. Its challenge was the composition – placing the heavy weight of the pilings on the left side and counteracting with a sliver of light and darkened skies on the right.

The second small painting was done on a rainy morning with a heavy dose of grey atmosphere. This painting’s challenge was to sneak some color in and keep the calmness of the day’s beginning.

Finally, the third was of the docks and fish shack. It was more of an experiment with more texture, rhythm with pilings and water, and composing with angles.

Second Tuesday at the Wetlands

by on Sep.09, 2014, under Oil Painting, Plein Air

On this next Tuesday I moved from last week’s easterly view to looking north across Coos Bay from Millicoma Wetlands across Coos Bay with McCullough bridge barely seen in distance. Again, more tidal land.

Final Millicoma Wetlands Painting

by on Aug.29, 2014, under Oil Painting, Plein Air

And, the final oil painting. When I sat to absorb the landscape in front of me I was intrigued with the meandering tide-catching streams leading to a small grove of evergreens and then winding away into the background. It all had a soft, value-changing backdrop of hills and sets of hills more distant bleeding into the sky.

Plein Air at Millicoma Wetlands, Coos Bay

by on Aug.28, 2014, under Oil Painting, Plein Air

Our Coos Bay plein air group spent Tuesday, August 26 at Millicoma Wetlands. On this adventure I attached my GoPro to my GoPro head harness and did a 30 second time lapse of the event. After editing I uploaded a short version of the day to youtube.

The next time out I find I will need to tripod the camera while I paint and where it while making rounds to visit other artists.

My final painting will be posted later.
